Stop Letting Things Slide!
By Chris Obst
What are you tolerating that you have the power to change?
Think about your people, projects, systems, behaviours, technical issues, the nagging feeling that you need to brush up on something, the tension in the air about an unresolved issue.
3 things you need to know about tolerating stuff:
- whatever you tolerate adds to the weight you carry, it adds to your frustration, clutter, and resentment.
- the stuff that bogs you down, bogs your team down. There's no getting around that.
- the act of tolerating something drains your energy, and postpones the reality you are working to create.
Don't tolerate that stuff.
Saying, "I'm not going to tolerate that anymore," feels great! And then taking action boosts your energy even higher.
As a manager, you set the bar for what gets tackled and what slides in your department. Give yourself and your team an energy boost by shedding some dead weight this week.
Here are four steps to tackling what's affecting your team that you have been tolerating:
- Focus on 5 things that you have the power to change.
e.g. the Fin account has been dormant since Ted retired.
- Identify a desired outcome for the change
e.g. Fin comes back as a regular client, and builds a new relationship with the company
- Attach action steps to achieve the outcome.
e.g. Call Ted for his thoughts, take Ted and Fin out for lunch, etc.
- Take an action step each day this week. (And don't forget that you can delegate.)
Sometimes we let things slide because the idea of taking on the whole issue is too much. Don't overwhelm yourself here.
You don't have to be able to resolve issues all at once. Just identify the thing that's bugging you, affirm that you aren't tolerating it any longer, take a step toward resolution each day, and build up your momentum.
By the end of the week, I guarantee that you and your team will feel lighter, less frustrated, and you will have more energy to perform at your peak.
